About this module

The assessment and use of socio-economic impacts in decision-making is however complex, and there is a small (but growing) amount of research and data available on these effects. Over the years, methodologies of socio-economic impact assessments have improved with the gaining of experience with GM crops.

Major focus of the Module and main goals

This module aims to impart knowledge and skills to users in identifying, characterising and using socio-economic considerations in GMO decision-making.
Upon completing this module, you will be able to:

  • Identify relevant socio-economic aspects in different contexts;
  • Assign measurable indicators to socio-economic considerations that can be used in an impact assessment framework;
  • Assess the quality (strengths and weaknesses) of socio-economic case studies;
  • Effectively communicate the relevance and use of socio-economic considerations in the impact assessment of GMOs to the public and relevant authorities.

A better understanding of socio-economic considerations in biotechnology will empower all stakeholders in discussing and using socio-economic considerations to assess the broader impact of biotechnological applications.
